Position Summary:
This is part of a larger effort in our lab in collaboration with colleagues at MILA and McGill. The issue is whether leading Large Language Models actually understand the text they are presented with. There is a large current debate about this issue.
- Using techniques from Psychology, Linguistics, and Speech and Language Pathology, e.g. using the Discourse Comprehension Test, to compare the performance of various LLMs (Large Language Models, or AI) to that of humans
- Will be designing, running, and analyzing experiments on leading LLMs to see whether they can match known human performance on understanding human discourse
- Will join in this research group by helping organize articles from this fast-growing literature
- Write up results of these experiments and submit to appropriate journals and conferences
- Present frequent lab presentations
- Be involved in possible recommendations which might include suggestions for improvements to existing models
Qualifications:
- Solid performance in basic McGill courses in psychology and computer science
- Basic knowledge of psychology and computer science
- Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 on a scale of 0-4.
