Position Overview*
KSS offers a range of programs that provide a balance of hands-on science activities, field-based exploration, and adventure programming. All programs are based upon a theme including but not limited to aquatic ecology, forest ecology, earth science, naturalization, health, and leadership.
The Camp Nurse engages with our day, residential, and teen leadership programs. This position is the primary caregiver for each child while on KSS campus and is responsible for planning, administering, and documenting all participant health-related situations. Fellow staff, children, and guardians will rely on the Summer Health Care Provider to keep a safe and healthy community throughout the Summer. The Camp Nurse will be expected to adhere to dynamic health guidance and risk management policy set by KSS.

• 10% Staff coaching and mentorship.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities – Minimum Requirements:*

• Willingness to be ‘on call’ by phone 24 hours a day while programs are in session;
• Have an interest in, respect for, and ability to work with children;
• Strong work ethic and will work until the job is complete;
• Ability to supervise an EMT to maintain high health and safety standards;
• Ability to oversee and coach camp staff to maintain high health and safety standards;
• Motivation to contribute positively to the KSS at-large community;
• Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form;
• Multi-task efficiently while managing a high-volume workload in a fast-paced, changing environment;
• Superior customer service skills, with the ability to be creative and think ’outside the box’;
• The ability to be flexible in a dynamic work environment and use critical thinking;
• Strong command of communication, writing, and organizational skills;
• Effectively interact with people of diverse backgrounds and different levels of experience;
• Ability to work in a busy environment with many distractions;
• Write incident reports with attention to detail

Required education, experience, and certifications:*

• Must be able to successfully pass a comprehensive background check;
• A licensed physician, or a registered nurse license;
• Excellent driving record and a valid driver’s license; Candidates age 20+ with a minimum of 4 years driving experience will be required to participate in and pass Van Driver Training, and they will be required to drive a 15-passenger van

Preferred Skills:*

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) and Adobe;
• Comprehension of the Spanish language via written and/or verbal form;
• Excellent driving record and a valid driver’s license

Physical Requirements*

• Able to work a majority of the time outside at high altitude in varying conditions including uneven and slick terrain and unpredictable weather and situations.
• Physically able to assist participants with recreation equipment during activities.
• Able to lift a minimum of 75 lbs. with assistance.
• Dexterity, auditory and visual acuity to operate computers and phones or mobile devices.
• Auditory and visual acuity to interact with guests, students, clients on a daily basis.
• Able to successfully manage multiple, high priority tasks in a fast-paced and often times crowded and noisy environment

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• The Camp Nurse will provide care to campers and staff in day, residential, and adventure programming near and throughout Summit County Colorado 24/7 on the days you are scheduled;
• The Camp Nurse will remain on call on days when they are not scheduled in order to be consulted by the Camp EMT, but only need to be available by phone;
• Uphold health care provider rules and regulations as outlined by Colorado Office of Early Childhood licensing and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment for operating a Colorado residential and day camp;
• Work with children and staff during a pandemic, stay informed on public health standards/practices to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 & other communicable illnesses, and support/write/edit KSS Risk Management policies specific to health and safety practices;
• Manage and coach incidents in person/on-the-phone and coach staff with basic first aid, wilderness first aid, and wilderness first responder certifications;
• Store, administer, and delegate over-the-counter and prescription medications to program participants;
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of care;
• Work with KSS Customer Experience Team to screen and ensure accurate health information/documentation and communicate with guardians as necessary;
• Work directly with Program Managers and Assistant Managers, Child Care Health Consultant, EMS, fire department, and hospital, as necessary;
• Track and maintain all KSS medical supplies and first aid kits;
• Attend and participate in camp programming when available, facilitate staff meetings as necessary and conduct trainings as assigned;
• Candidates age 20+ with a minimum of 4 years driving experience will be required to participate in and pass Van Driver Training, and they will be required to drive a 15-passenger van;
• Other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule*
This is a full-time, seasonal position. The typical work schedule will require a flexible schedule, including days, nights, and weekends. Discovery Overnight Camp Counselors should expect to work 70+ hours a week including evenings, overnights, and weekends to support programming. The Camp Nurse position can expect to have 5 days on, and 2 days off, and stay “on-call” while programming is running even when off.

Work Environment*
This position requires the employee to work in close contact with their teammates. The office space is small and the employee must have the ability to stay focused while others are working in close proximity. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but varies seasonally due to programs and staffing on campus. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee while performing the essential functions of this job.
This position may require traveling to off-site programming locations. In most situations, KSS will provide transportation to off-site programming locations. However, staff may be asked to use personal vehicles to travel within Summit County. Any travel mileage in personal vehicles outside Summit County may be reimbursed.

Room and Board*
Keystone Science School provides housing for this position. The Camp Nurse lives in the KSS health center and may have campers staff overnight in a separate room as necessary. During the summer months, KSS houses a large staff so employees can expect shared living spaces (staff kitchen, bathrooms, showers, laundry, common spaces, etc.). Food is provided for this position, most meals will be eaten with campers, but the kitchen strives to have food options for all staff to meet dietary needs. Housing and food are provided at no additional cost.
