Description:

Are you a law student looking to gain work experience in a legal setting in the summer of 2024?
The Ontario government is one of the largest employers of law students in Canada, hiring approximately 75 summer law students and175 articling and law practice program students every year. Our law student programs offer the opportunity to gain legal skills in a supportive and collaborative environment. Students participate in work that has a real and meaningful impact on the lives of Ontarians. For information about the work of each of MAG’s areas of practice, please visit the Law Student Programs Practice Areas.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) seeks one (1) summer law student, whose duties will primarily consist of providing support to SIU counsel.

The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency in Ontario that has jurisdiction over municipal, regional, and provincial police officers. The SIU, independent of any police service and operating at arm’s length from the Ministry of the Attorney General, investigates incidents involving officials where they are implicated in the following cases:

  • The death of a person
  • The serious injury of a person
  • The discharge of a firearm at a person
  • The sexual assault of a person, as reported by the person

The SIU conducts investigations to determine whether there are grounds to charge an official in relation to the incident under review.
