Description:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The OMME 5-Week Academic Enrichment program helps English/multilingual learners improve their language skills and reach their full potential. Our program is carefully crafted to cater to the unique needs of students with varying levels of English proficiency, enabling them to focus on specific aspects of language development, including reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills. Our interactive and engaging language-rich learning activities are designed with a project-based learning approach that fosters a supportive and enjoyable environment for students to practice and refine their language skills. The program features a comprehensive academic curriculum that includes Math and ESL/English Language Arts, ensuring that cognitively demanding tasks and grade-level complex texts are accessible to multilingual learners. In addition to academics, our program also offers a diverse range of enrichment activities, including STEM, Arts, Leadership Building, and Physical Fitness, tailored to the needs of English/multilingual learners entering 1st-12th grades.

BPS Summer Learning Academies aim to:

  • Stem summer learning loss and increase academic achievement
  • Develop student socio-emotional skills and increase student efficacy by building skills and competencies
  • Strengthen the effectiveness of school-community partnerships
  • Promote student health and wellness

REPORTS TO: The position reports to the Office of Expanded Learning Time (ELO)/ Office of Multilingual and Multicultural Education (OMME)

PROGRAM SCHEDULE:

Summer Learning Academy Site Coordinators are required to attend all scheduled central and site-based planning meetings, training and professional development sessions, work all required program hours, as well as complete all required wrap-up duties, as indicated in job description.

  • All training and program hours as indicated in the program-specific job description.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Oversee BPS Summer Learning planning and programming at a specific program site. Supervise teachers, paraprofessionals, and other program staff, serve as site lead for instructional support, and oversee operational management for programming. Work to:

  • Stem summer learning loss and increase academic achievement
  • Develop student socio-emotional skills and increase student efficacy by building skills and competencies
  • Promote student health and wellness.

Specific duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide leadership and management at one program site
  • Participate in the hiring of teachers, paraprofessionals, and support staff
  • Support efforts to recruit, enroll and engage students in the Summer Learning Academy
  • Develop and submit daily schedules for their sites utilizing the operational systems put in place by the Office of Multilingual and Multicultural Education.
  • Serve as the Summer School’s liaison with OMME in Central Office.
  • Be responsible for the implementation of the OMME program model by building a strong team, ensuring positive outcomes and a high-quality experience for the scholars.
  • Supervise the administration of summer district-wide assessments to all enrolled students
  • Schedule and coordinate summer formative and summative assessments.
  • Oversee the use of data-driven instruction utilizing formative assessments.
  • Review lesson plans and create ‘best practice’ instructional strategies.
  • Implement and maintain a positive behavior management system that is clear and aligns with program goals.
  • Ensure that all curriculum and supplies are received, distributed, and maintained throughout the program.
  • Coordinate logistics related to field trips if applicable.
  • Participate in the development of the program schedule in advance of the summer
  • Supervise instruction, services, and the monitoring of student progress; oversee any performance task or assessment administered to students
  • Support high-quality instruction by facilitating professional development and curriculum planning sessions, modeling instructional practices, observing instruction, and providing feedback
  • Prepare and manage curriculum materials, including pre-program setup and materials inventory, after the conclusion of programming
  • Engage and collaborate with families as partners in planning and problem-solving
  • Establish a culturally competent, trauma-sensitive learning climate
  • Manage student data systems (e.g. attendance, schedules, etc.)
  • Track work of BPS teachers and paraprofessionals, complete time reporting forms for payroll, and arrange for coverage in the event of teaching staff absence
  • Execute and enforce site policies and student discipline code
  • Coordinate emergency response procedures in the event of an emergency
  • Work with other site staff to monitor the quality of programming to ensure outcome goals are on track to be met. Implement evaluation protocols - surveys, tests, etc.
  • Collaborate with BPS, BASB, NIOST, and other evaluators to implement evaluation tools
  • All additional duties as indicated in the program-specific job description.
  • Demonstrate completion of other critical tasks and duties as requested by the Office of Expanded Learning Time.

Program Delivery: fully in-person
Program Start Date: Monday, July 8, 2024
Program End Date: Friday, August 9, 2024
Hours:
General hours include a 6-7 hour work day and additional prep/planning time depending on specific sites. For example, programming at sites could have a duration of 8:00 am - 2 pm or 9:30 am - 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday. Job responsibilities will require site prep, data entry, data analysis, communications to families planning, and prep time outside the hours of instruction.

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • License: ESL License and/or SEI Endorsement
  • Experience: Demonstrated experience working with Multilingual Learners (ELD 1-5) and/or Students with Interrupted Formal Education.
  • Preferred prior experience as an After School or Summer Site leader.
  • Massachusetts teaching license or school administrator license.
  • At least 1 year of professional teaching or administrator experience
  • Willing to explore student learning in a non-traditional setting and connect student learning through project-based, experiential learning.
  • Willing to work in close collaboration with a community-based organization with shared goals in a student-centered, school-aligned, results-focused initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as an instructional leader__supervising other educators, providing constructive feedback, and fostering collaboration.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States. Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.
  • Additional qualifications as indicated in the program-specific job description.

QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:

  • Current teacher or administrator in the Boston Public Schools.
  • Prior experience working in a BPS summer learning program and/or in close collaboration with a community-based organization
  • Technology-savvy
  • BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS’ official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.
