Our Summer Placement Programme is designed to offer you the opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills you require to become an engineering or business professional of the future. Throughout the programme you will receive coaching and support from your team to achieve your objectives as well as your personal development goals. You will gain a wide array of experience on your placement that you can apply to your academic studies and future career.
At Leonardo we value individuals who continuously demonstrate a dedication to their personal development, and successful completion of a Summer Placement with Leonardo can lead to an offer on our Graduate Development Programme. We are looking for highly motivated individuals who are willing to take on a challenge to complete a summer placement, and we will demand a high degree of customer focus and work performance from you in order to meet our operational challenges. If you are willing able to commit to giving your best performance, you will find Leonardo a very rewarding place to work!

All of our placements should be working towards (a) a minimum of an upper Second class Bachelors/Integrated Masters degree, or (b) a higher degree, such as an MSc or PhD. In all cases the subject should be Electronics Engineering, Engineering Science, Physics or another relevant discipline.

Responsibilities:

You will report to an experienced engineer who will provide day to day guidance and on the job training. You will be introduced to the hardware development processes and utilise state-of-the-art methods, technology and tools. You will gain experience on an aspect of the development lifecycle that will include requirements analysis, design, implementation, integration, applied research and test. You will given the opportunity to learn about the Leonardo product via a placement within a real IPT.
You will contribute to solving real life engineering problems on state of the art test equipment. Particular emphasis will be placed on learning practical skills that may not be easily gained or experienced in the academic environment of university.
You should demonstrate an interest in one or more of the disciplines within Electronics Hardware Engineering (e.g. RF, Microwave, Power supply, EMC, FPGA and high speed digital). If you successfully complete your placement and meet the required standard, you may be given the opportunity to be “fast tracked” to a further summer placement or Graduate position at Leonardo.
To learn the skills required for hardware development, you will develop practical skills in design techniques for aerospace applications, understand key technologies, and develop your experience using ECAD tools and test equipment. You will deliver technical reports and presentations on you work assignments to your supervisor and fellow placement students.
Most training will be delivered on the job, working on real test equipment within projects groups delivering test systems to our customers. Additional formal technical training to support the on the job training may be provided via taught courses depending on the business needs.
