Description:

You will apply expert scientific judgment; in the analysis of patient specimens, to verify and validate test results, and in the provision of advice to the clinical unit where appropriate.
Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following key capabilities, knowledge and experience. Within the context of the responsibilities described above under ‘Your key responsibilities’, the ideal applicant will be someone who can demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated expert level of knowledge, expertise, skills and scientific judgment in Cytogenetics and Genomics and is recognised for this expertise as a resource for advice and consultation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the human, physical and financial resources of a laboratory.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team member, cooperating and communicating effectively with those in the immediate work situation and the wider work environment including, in particular, other sections in Genomics.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the quality of clinical practice within Cytogenetics, to ensure the maintenance of relevant legislative, administrative and professional standards and to meet NATA/ISO/TGA accreditation/certification requirements.
  • Demonstrated active leadership in the development of improvement initiatives, provision of strategic advice.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • The successful applicant must hold at least a relevant tertiary degree qualification in Medical Laboratory Science (or relevant equivalent qualification).
  • Higher relevant qualifications such as Fellowship of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (Cytogenetics) or Fellowship of the Faculty of Science (RCPA) or equivalent qualification would be highly regarded.
  • Appointment to this position requires proof of qualifications. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager prior to the commencement of clinical duties.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) requirements

  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
