The Role
Supervises daily operations related to the efficient delivery of in-house maintenance and repairs to transit fleet. Provides advice to Managers regarding repairs, modifications, and maintenance issues at multiple locations.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Supervises Truck & Coach Technicians, Automotive Service Attendants, Automotive Bodypersons (Licensed), apprentices, and students. Administers contracts with contractors performing repairs.
  • Meets deadlines for work orders, maintenance schedules, and special events. Ensures work is completed efficiently and per established practices and procedures. Monitors bus lock out and wheel torque procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Initiates work orders through the fleet management system for preventive, non-scheduled, and accident-related maintenance and repairs, and safety inspections.
  • Assesses vehicles and equipment requiring emergency repair and coordinates with staff to determine problems and resolutions.
  • Prepares repair appraisals and estimates for insurance claims, and submits to risk management.
  • Liaises with managers, bus operators, and emergency service providers regarding transit assistance during emergencies.
  • Completes purchase requisitions, and prioritizes, schedules, and authorizes repairs, with signing authority. Discusses parts supply with stockroom staff. Ensures parts are received with minimum delay and follows up as needed.
  • Ensures tools and shop equipment are maintained in good working condition. Ensures shop floor is maintained in a clean, orderly state. Ensures the care/custody/security of equipment and small tools. Ensures measures are in place to prevent abuse, theft, and misplacement/loss.
  • Exchanges information and provides primary backup/emergency information daily to Transit Supervisors.
  • Deals with manufacturers regarding repair and warranty issues, and with suppliers on equipment operation and repairs. Exchanges maintenance information with other transit organizations and government agencies.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of fleet maintenance, normally acquired through a community college diploma in automotive technology or equivalent education, plus progressively responsible experience in mechanical equipment repair and supervision.
  • Must possess a Truck and Coach Certificate (310T).
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, related legislation (e.g., health and safety, Highway Traffic Act), general repair standards, and collective agreements.
  • Organizational, problem solving, and continuous improvement skills to prioritize, assign, and schedule work and inspections, ensuring safe operating conditions; and make recommendations to management.
  • Leadership, human relations, and communication skills to supervise, train, develop, motivate, and support staff; assist other staff and exchange detailed information; and participate as an effective team member.
  • Ability to read and apply information from manufacturer, policy, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports, equipment service standards, requisition forms, and accident estimates.
  • Computer skills using software such as Microsoft Office and a fleet management system.
  • Must have a valid Class D diver’s license with Z air-brake endorsement to operate Regional vehicles. Ability to travel within Waterloo Region.
  • Ability to participate in an official standby/on-call rotation to respond to legislated or time sensitive demands beyond regularly scheduled work hours.
