Description:

As a member of the Berkeley Capital Sustainability Team, the Sustainability Advisor will be the key point of contact and sustainability lead for 3-4 development projects / live construction sites. The role will be focused on ensuring high standards of environmental management, data reporting and delivering improvements in the areas of carbon, energy, water, and waste.
The Sustainability Advisor will be expected to work across multiple departments and provide subject matter expertise to support project teams in complying with environmental regulation, meeting local level aspirations, and delivering against the targets set out in the Berkeley Group Sustainability Strategy.
The individual will benefit from frequent contact with a wider network of sustainability professionals across the Group and will have the opportunity to support cross-division work on key topic work streams (e.g. waste, environmental management system).

Key Responsibilities

  • Proactively promote sustainability and deliver meaningful business improvements in key impact areas.
  • Raise awareness of the Group Sustainability Strategy and Standards via both formal and informal training of colleagues.
  • Work collaboratively with project teams at different stages of the development process (e.g. procurement, construction, sales) to ensure Group sustainability standards and commitments are met.
  • Assess compliance with the in-house environmental management system and make recommendations for improvement via frequent site visits and formal audits.
  • Assist in the monthly collation, analysis and reporting of sustainability data and manage the formal quarterly submissions to Berkeley Group.
  • Keep up to date with the sustainability agenda, new legislation and best practice guidelines and understand how they may affect the company.
  • Attend meetings with senior management to discuss sustainability performance.
  • Work as part of the Group-wide sustainability forum and working groups to share knowledge, drive good practice and implement the company Sustainability Strategy.
  • Compile written reports on sustainability performance, including for client / joint venture reporting where required.
  • Support relevant external assessment (e.g. Considerate Constructors Scheme) and certification processes (e.g. BREEAM).

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • A degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject (e.g. sustainability, environmental management).
  • 1-3 years’ experience in a sustainability or an environmental management focused role. A candidate with clearly transferable skills from a related role would be considered.
  • Experience of working in the construction or built environment is desirable, but other related sectors would be considered.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Confidence in working with people at all levels in an organisation.
  • The ability to motivate people to change their behaviour.
  • Good knowledge of sustainability issues within the construction/house building industry and an understanding of environmental legislation, including waste duty of care.
  • A broad understanding of sustainability, focusing not only on environmental issues, but also the relative importance of social and economic impacts of our activities.
