Purpose of the role
As the custodian of Auto & General’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility, the Sustainability Manager plays a pivotal role in shaping the organisation’s strategic vision for sustainability. This leadership position involves not only adhering to regulatory standards but also proactively advancing sustainable practices that align with Auto & General’s values and business objectives.
The manager is tasked with developing comprehensive sustainability strategies that are tailored to our operational and industry landscape. This includes identifying key opportunities to enhance environmental performance, promote social responsibility initiatives, and integrate ethical considerations into our supply chain and operational practices.
Central to the Sustainability Manager’s mandate is the cultivation of robust relationships with stakeholders while championing sustainability at every level of the organisation. This encompasses engaging with internal stakeholders such as senior leadership, department heads, and employees to garner support and commitment to sustainability initiatives.

WHAT EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING

The ideal candidate will have a passion for and experience in driving sustainability initiatives in a corporate environment. Additionally, they will also have:

  • Educational Background: Preference will be given to candidates holding qualifications in disciplines such as environmental management, environmental science, or environmental engineering.
  • Professional Expertise : Demonstrated experience in devising strategies, managing risks, and assessing impacts within the realm of Corporate Responsibility.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Proven track record of driving positive outcomes across diverse areas, adeptly navigating relationships with a wide array of stakeholders.
  • Communication Proficiency: Ability to convey complex information concisely and effectively, both in written and verbal formats, to Senior Executive leadership. This includes written papers, and presentations to executive leadership and stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Define and align the strategic direction and scope for managing the Sustainability discipline, encompassing the implementation of robust risk management, compliance, and performance strategies.
  • Expert Guidance: Furnish the Executive team and other stakeholders with current intelligence, comprehensive analysis, and expert counsel, staying abreast of legislative changes and evolving local and international environmental and social policies.
  • Insightful Reporting: Deliver timely and insightful reports and presentations to stakeholders and board members, offering valuable perspectives and actionable recommendations.
  • Compliance Oversight : Oversee system and process audits to guarantee adherence to environmental standards, driving the risk assessment process to mitigate potential hazards effectively.
  • Incident Mitigation: Design and execute strategies geared towards minimizing environmental incidents, breaches, and impacts. Continuously monitor trends, meticulously document incidents, conduct thorough reviews, and institutionalise corrective and preventive measures.
  • Organisational Integration: Foster awareness and alignment with sustainability objectives and strategies across the organisation, collaborating closely with the Communications Team to facilitate comprehensive engagement.
