Description:

Overview:
Reporting to the Corporate Design Lead, the Sustainability Specialist will contribute to the development, implementation, and administration of the corporation’s sustainable development programs. The Sustainability Specialist assesses the environmental impacts of existing operations and conducts analysis to determine opportunities for improvement. The role ensures the corporation’s business practices and programs meet or exceed provincial legislation and the corporation’s commitment to operating in a sustainable manner.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with senior leadership and subject matter experts to create and amend a long-term sustainability plan that integrates the environment with business interests and provides for targets and constant improvement.
  • Liaise with leadership and staff throughout the corporation to garner support and achieve corporate environmental objectives.
  • Provide support to leadership in meeting corporate strategies and legislative requirements as they pertain to sustainable development.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of third-party sustainability certifications.
  • Participate on, or lead, project teams and committees as requested to act as an environmental consultant and encourage sustainable solutions.
  • Prepare budget requests and multiyear projections for planned sustainability initiatives.
  • Lead, coordinate or contribute to a variety of initiatives to further efficiency and environmental goals.
  • Coordinate required measuring, monitoring, studies, and audits to document and assess the corporation’s environmental performance and maintain all related programs and processes.
  • Create templates for required data capture from various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Consult all stakeholders to obtain information and calculate corporate sustainability metrics.
  • Use industry / government recommended protocols and modeling tools to measure and analyze environmental metrics and compare with industry norms.
  • Coordinate periodic waste audits to determine the effectiveness of waste management strategies.
  • Through research, education and networking develop or expand expertise in a wide variety of subjects that contribute to corporate environmental and social responsibility.
  • Liaise with the other Crowns, the low carbon government office, as well as other government and non-government environmental organizations and experts to understand other’s approaches and anticipate trends across government, business, and society towards environmental management.

Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree in Science, Environmental Sciences, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of two years of related experience with developing and integrating sustainable development practices within a large and complex organization.
  • Experience in compiling data needed to determine a large organization’s greenhouse gas inventory.
  • Knowledge of green building concepts, as well as familiarity with the LEED system and other green building designations.
  • Knowledge of key sustainability issues and how they can be integrated into business to create measurable value.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Microsoft Teams). Advanced Microsoft Excel skills are an asset.
