ABOUT US

Western Technology Services (WTS) at Western is committed to providing high-quality, cost-effective technology-related services and solutions in support of the campus community. Infrastructure Services, as a division of WTS, is responsible for providing faculty, staff and students with a technology infrastructure comprised of hardware and software that supports the teaching, learning, and administration needs of the campus.
The Infrastructure Services division is tasked with the design, implementation, and maintenance, of the referenced infrastructure which includes the foundational components, Data Network, Data Center Operations, Central Servers, and System Administration.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Post Secondary Diploma/Degree in Business Technology Management, Computer Science, or an Information Technology field
  • Information Technology Industry certifications (e.g. PMP, ITIL, TOGAF, DevOps, CBAP, CISSP)
  • Current Technology Vendor certifications (e.g. Microsoft Azure, CISCO, VMWare, Red Hat)

Experience:

  • 7 years of experience supporting enterprise level server operating systems including installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting across multiple vendors
  • Experience providing technical leadership for large-scale and enterprise wide projects
  • Experience maintaining and overseeing the application of strong security practices for servers, applications and the data housed within an IT managed infrastructure
  • Experience in large scale, multi-site physical and cloud-based data centers
  • Experience supporting server virtualization technologies
  • Experience with backup/restore technologies
  • Experience in scripting languages such as Perl, PowerShell, Bash and/or Python

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Familiarity with network concepts and administrative procedures in support of a large production environment preferred
  • Demonstrated proficiency in setup and management of server operating systems
  • Demonstrated proficiency with server management platforms (Microsoft Endpoint Manager, Ansible, Spacewalk, Satellite, etc.)
  • Demonstrated proficiency deploying and managing servers in cloud datacenters (e.g. Azure, AWS)
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Identity management and general concepts around central directory services such as Active Directory and Azure (Entra ID)
  • Demonstrated proficiency with implementation and management of both servers and storage
  • Demonstrated proficiency with systems management technologies
  • Demonstrated familiarity with networking
  • Demonstrated familiarity with IT Service Management concepts (Service, Incident, Problem, and Change management)
  • Demonstrated familiarity with software license management (Microsoft Operating Systems, Azure, Linux Operating Systems)
  • Demonstrated ability to learn, develop and support scripts in languages such as Perl, PowerShell, Bash and/or Python
  • Ability to provide technical guidance regarding infrastructure design, deployment, and support for WTS technology services
  • Ability to write clear, concise procedural and technical documentation
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to interact with people in a professional, respectful, and diplomatic manner
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively interact with technical and non-technical users

Responsibilities:

The Systems Engineer is a key member of a team responsible for the design, deployment, and support of Western central technology infrastructure leveraging cloud technologies. The role will conduct a variety of engineering tasks related to the development, operation, and maintenance of complex technology systems, ensuring the integration of processes and methodologies to support the performance of the system. The System Engineer will leverage expertise in a variety of technical disciplines and will manage the solution lifecycle of cloud services and their integration across other Infrastructure Services service areas. The Cloud Systems Engineer will be the technical expert responsible to identify requirements and deficiencies in information technology solutions, advising customers in product selection and use, capacity planning operations, and performance management. The role will provide technical leadership for medium to large-scale projects, oversee the end-to-end solution and ensure the effectiveness of the solution against the stated requirements.
