Description:

Ulster County HEAD START has a career opportunity for a Head Start Teacher at the Children’s Learning Center in Kingston, NY. In this position, you will ensure that the classroom is in compliance with Head Start Performance Standards and with the UCCAC, Inc. Head Start Educational Service Plan.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred - B.A. or advanced Degree in either: early childhood education or coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education (with at least 6 courses in early childhood education and 2 years’ experience teaching preschool-aged children)
  • Alternate Requirement - associate degree in early childhood or coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education (with at least 6 courses in ECE) and minimum 1-year experience working with young children, in a preschool setting. Must be enrolled in a BA degree program in early childhood within 6 months of employment.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to support the role of the parent as the primary educator of the child.
  • Ability to relate to and work with staff and parents as a team.
  • Valid NYS driver’s license and reliable means of personal transportation.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to complete training at first opportunity.
  • Able to lift and carry a fifty-pound child.
  • Bilingual Spanish a plus.

Responsibilities: The Teacher will provide supervision of children and:

  • Provide a safe, healthy learning environment that is welcoming to parents and supports and respects gender, culture, language, ethnicity and family composition.
  • Provide an environment and implement a curriculum that encourages the development of self-awareness, autonomy, and self-expression and supports the emerging skills of the child in all aspects of their learning.
  • Plan for routines and transitions so that they occur in timely, predictable, and unrushed manner according to each child’s needs.
  • With the parent/guardian and center team, identify strengths, needs, and interests of the child and develop individual plans.
  • Conduct classroom planning sessions to develop both individual and weekly lesson plans. Submit lesson plans for review in accordance with the established procedures.
  • Provide a balanced daily program of child-initiated and adult-directed activities.
  • Ensure all procedures of the component plan are followed including taking responsibility for home visits, screenings, student records, COR child assessments, case conferences, and individual plans.
  • Integrate the educational aspects of the program into other Head Start components.
  • Attend all staff meetings, in-service training sessions, component meetings; participate in program committees; participate in conferences that might require overnight and traveling.
  • Participate in the annual updating of the Education Services Plan as requested.
  • Participate with children in meals, using this opportunity to teach appropriate social manners.
  • Attend parent meetings as needed to familiarize parents with Head Start and its operations.
  • Ensure that all classroom materials are kept clean and in good repair: submit yearly inventory as requested.
