MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A PhD in Sociology or a closely related discipline. PhD must be in hand by time of the appointment. ABD will be considered only if there is strong evidence that the PhD will be completed by the start of the appointment;
- At least a three year track record of effective instruction of courses in Sociology and/or closely related disciplines;
- Evidence of a commitment to developing innovative pedagogical approaches;
- Skilled mentorship suitable to the candidate’s career stage and available opportunities
IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS, THE BELOW QUALIFICATIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED AN ASSET
- Experience with diverse instructional software and technologies;
- Experience with pedagogical innovations, such as experiential learning, community-service learning, project-based learning, and work-integrated learning;
- A track-record of service to a department or comparable unit;
- Versatility in teaching.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will provide in-person instruction in a range of Sociology courses in assorted teaching environments, including large lecture classes and smaller seminars. Normal teaching load is eight courses per year and includes Spring or Summer teaching. The topics to be taught are not fixed, but some possible courses to be taught might include Introduction to Sociology, Social Statistics, Social Problems, Globalization, Sociology of the Family, Sociology of Youth, Sociology of Religion, Criminology, Social Theory, Population and Society; Sociological Research Methods, and the Sociology of Deviance and Conformity. The candidate might also be expected to provide one-on-one paper writing supervision to a small number of field placement students each academic term. The position can also include administrative service, which comes with teaching release.
There is no research expectation associated with this position, although the successful candidate is expected to remain current with the relevant literature in their fields as it applies to their teaching assignments.
