Description:

BCIT’s School of Health Sciences Medical Laboratory Science Department is seeking a temporary, part-time (0.4 FTE) Technical Staff III with a specialization in Clinical Microbiology to provide technical services related to the preparation of student laboratories.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) Diploma
  • Current CSMLS registration
  • Minimum four years recent technical experience in a Clinical Microbiology medical laboratory

Responsibilities:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • A varied work schedule, including some weekend and Stat holiday responsibilities; weekday schedule may vary depending on term schedule
  • Under the direction of the Clinical Microbiology Instructors and Assistant Instructors, supports weekly student laboratory sessions through the following activities: prepares and QC’s culture media, prepares reagents and stains; maintains stock cultures of organisms according to the Clinical Laboratory Institute Standards (CLSI) guidelines; prepares simulated specimens/cultures following specific BCIT SOPs; prepares student requisitions
  • Assists with the set up of daily student laboratory sessions, including filtering stains and set up of Gram stain stations
  • Maintains stain, reagent, dried media, sterile lab supplies and CO2 tank inventories
  • Creates and maintains electronic records for media and reagent recipes
  • Creates and maintains electronic records of simulated culture recipes
  • Creates and maintains electronic records of patient information labels used for student labs
  • Troubleshoots and investigates culture, media and reagent problems
  • Assists with the start of term set-up and the end of term clean-up of the microbiology lab and prep room
  • Documents and maintains records of activities under PHAC guidelines for CL2 microbiology laboratories, including but not limited to: the validation and verification of autoclaves, maintenance of frozen inventory of stock organisms and the creation and updating of documents and procedures related to biosafety standards
