Description:

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

With the creation of the Plug & Play function and the shift towards opportunity led new product/process design and development in the Capital Delivery & Commercial Organisation, there is a need to grow and develop our manufacturing and product design capability and expertise, the standards for the new product/process design and development team, and the governance around new product/process development delivery and ensure these align with the benefits this delivers to Severn Trent Water.
This shift underpins the need for greater standardisation, consistency and quality. As such, requires an individual with significant experience at New Product/Process Development Technical Lead level in the plug and play function to set, maintain and raise the standards for manufacturing and product design disciplines within the plug and play function.
This role will be accountable for determining the techniques, templates, tools and processes required to establish and improve the Plug and Play standards within this discipline “How we do things in Plug and Play Engineering” and feed into the wider Capital Delivery Design standards as affected by the work Plug and Play carries out.
This role will also be expected to set up and lead a robust design review process which covers the full Plug and Play project lifecycle and ensures that anything we produce is compliant with UK-CA and machinery directive legislation, along with any other applicable legislation which may be applicable to our broader asset portfolio.
This role will explore the opportunities to deploy tactical short-term Research & Development and adopt new techniques and technologies for the immediate benefit of delivering the capital programme. As such, the individual will be expected to have a wide network within the industry and strong relationships throughout the supply chain.
This role will ensure that individuals are competent for the tasks they are being asked to perform in their discipline, and reviewing workload to ensure the best person for the job is being utilised throughout the Plug and Play function.
Ensure that the work in their discipline is checked and signed off by a person competent in their discipline.
In addition to the above, this role will be required to develop and mentor individual apprentices and engineers in their discipline throughout the design function to grow the individual’s skills, capabilities and qualifications.
This individual will be the ‘go to’ person for all discipline queries within the 250 plus design community and the wider supply chain for the entire capital programme
It is envisaged that the roll holder will also take an active leadership role in Plug and Play design projects, with a particular focus on ensuring our engineering opportunity analysis is robust, that new product/process design work is subject to regular and appropriate design reviews and that any external contract or consultancy resource is delivering in line with our internal standards for which the roll holder will be accountable.
You will deliver projects to programme, within budget, to the correct quality standards. Be part of developing the future design team!

Within this role you will:

  • Engage with multiple stakeholders (internal / external) to understand the root cause of the business problem that the standard design is aiming to address.
  • Act as EA liaison during feasibility and feedback any key learning and points to the team and into future designs.
  • Understand and review potential delivery and operational risks e.g. H&S, environmental, commissioning.
  • Contribute to the early development of commissioning plans
  • Ensure the standard plug and play solution is reviewed, benefit appraised, risks and learnings are captured, and the design is continually improved.
  • Conclude the appropriate product solution (and costing, liaising with commercial)

Responsibilities:

OUR PURPOSE IS TAKING CARE OF LIFE’S ESSENTIALS, BUT WE’RE ALSO BIG ON MAKING A DIFFERENCE, NOT JUST BECAUSE WE SHOULD BUT BECAUSE WE CARE.

AMP8, our next five-year regulatory period, will see us launch our biggest and most complex investment programme of almost £13bn, of which £6bn will be delivered through our capital programme.
This is more than double the size of the AMP7 capital programme and is an opportunity to drive real change.
Our new Plug and Play approach will be a collection of common parts that can be connected in different ways and work together (like rigs or tanks). They can be mixed and matched to create a whole range of different products.
Picture this as your ready-made catalogue of standard products. You can simply select the parts you need and then they arrive ready to go all in one.
This new innovative approach will help to combat the challenges of waste and water infrastructure, flooding and water quality. Be a part of something bringing benefits to our communities, health outcomes and environment.
Our Plug & Play methodology will enable us to build smarter, faster, safer, greener and more affordable projects.
It could be the biggest challenge of your career. If you want to do more because you care, we’d love to talk to you.
We are looking for a Technical Lead – New Product/Process Development to work within our Plug & Play team, truly delivering for the future.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE

Of course, it’s important that we attract the right skill sets, and those with the right experience but we value character, positivity, and a caring attitude in equal weight.
We want people who show up and roll their sleeves up. Restless spirits who are ready to be part of something bigger, who care, who really care… because when you really care, you’ll go above and beyond. When you really care you don’t just talk about it, you do more.

We would be looking for someone who has:

  • Experience in providing technical leadership to either a large programme of engineering transformation, or a consultancy-type engineering organisation focused on manufacturing products or machinery.
  • The ability to lead by technical example a team of engineers
  • Experience of working in a design environment at a senior level.
  • Experience of being accountable for engineering quality assurance in a production type environment.
  • Effective at integrating with matrix teams
  • Wide network of contacts within the profession and contacts throughout the supply chain

We welcome people from all walks of life and celebrate individuality as we know diverse minds, experiences and backgrounds help us to learn and better serve our communities. We employ thousands of people from across our community who really care about what they do. Because that is how we do what we do.
And when it comes to inclusion, we’re making sure we keep up the progress with our wonderful working groups – LGBTQ+, Women in Operations & STEM, Disability and Ethnicity, who help us do just that.

Within this role you will:
