ANGLO AMERICAN STEELMAKING COAL
Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.
Job Description
Our underground coal mine, Aquila, has an exciting opportunity for a Technical Services Superintendent that is based in Middlemount, QLD. You will work with our industry-leading remotely operated autonomous longwall technology, where our Aquila Mine won the Outstanding Mine Performance category at the 2023 Australian Mining Prospect Awards.
The mine features two longwall systems (walk on, walk off) ensuring production continuity. Both longwalls are fully remote capable from the site-based Remote Operations Centre (ROC) on the surface of the mine.
Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, you will drive the provision of comprehensive ventilation and gas management and other technical services in order to support the safe achievement of the mine’s operational targets. You will generally support all technical services functions as the effective department second in charge.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- Management and control of the underground mine ventilation system, gas management systems and mine environmental monitoring system
- Implementation of best practice gas drainage and ventilation practices
- Leading a team of ventilation and gas drainage professionals
- Develop medium and long term plans which align to the mine business plan and overall ventilation strategy
- Ongoing design, planning, implementing and monitoring of system effectiveness against legislative and corporate requirements as well as driving performance in your team
- Undertake and participate in a variety of ventilation and gas projects for improvement of mine operations
- Provide technical assistance in order to ensure hazard identification and risk assessment principles are firmly applied to all processes to ensure a safe underground working environment
- Liaise with the operations team to ensure targets are safety delivered in accordance with the annual mine plan
- Lead mining projects and facilitate solutions to technical and operational problems.
Qualifications
To be successful in the role, you will have the following:
- Degree qualified in Mining Engineering, Ventilation or relevant field
- Statutory qualification as a Ventilation Officer
- Significant experience in an underground coal mining operation as well as specialist knowledge in ventilation and gas drainage practices
- Demonstrated leadership skills with an ability to drive tangible performance in your team
- Experience with AutoCAD, XPAC, VentSim, Microsoft Suite
- Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills as well as the ability to drive performance
