This role will play a critical member in a team to provide quality and safe services to Whangarei Hospital.

Responsibilities:
ABOUT THE ROLE
- This role will be responsible for:
- Provide efficient and effective operations of the laboratory service
- Collection, receipt, documentation, registration, processing and reporting of all specimens including those referred to other laboratories, as required by authorized policies and protocols
- Ensure timely, accurate results are provided to pathology laboratory users
- Perform quality and safe technical and operational duties expected of a Laboratory Scientist / Technologist
- Supervise, offer technical advice and/or refer to HOD Medical Laboratory Scientists
The role will be based in the Microbiology department at Whangarei base hospital. The laboratory is fully accredited with IANZ and supplies clinically diagnostic result for hospital patients. The laboratory offers a combination of pathogen culture and molecular detection with manual and automated susceptibilities with the following platforms:
- BioMerieux BioFire FilmArray
- Cepheid GeneXpertXVI
- Roche Cobas 5800
- BD BacTec FX
- BioMerieux Vitek MS & Vitek2 Compact
- QuantStudio 5
- Qiagen EZ2 extraction
In June of 2024 the department will move to a newly constructed purpose built laboratory, still within the hospital grounds. This will see an expanse in laboratory size and introduction of a full designated molecular suite area. The department is expanding and modernising to meet the demands of a rapidly increasing population.
To be successful in the role you will:
- Hold New Zealand Registration as a Medical Laboratory Scientist
- Extensive experience in a Medical Laboratory and with related Information Systems
- Have a good understanding of medical laboratory operations and demonstrated analytical skills
- An effective team member with excellent interpersonal skills
- Client focused and committed to quality outcomes
- Full clean drivers licence
- Extensive experience in Clinical Microbiology or Molecular Microbiology
