JOB SUMMARY

The Technical Training Officer, Engineering, Crane and Work Equipment is responsible for training Engineering employees in Crane Fundamentals, Basic Machine Orientation, and Work Equipment Machine Qualifications. The incumbent is required to train, mentor, coach and qualify employees on various techniques related to the safe operation of Roadway Maintenance Machines (RRMs) and RRMs equipped with cranes. The role maintains facility equipment, job aids, and scheduled maintenance records for RRMs utilized for training purposes.

REQUIREMENTS

Experience

Engineering Track Construction and Maintenance

  • Between 5 to 10 years of experience in Engineering track construction maintenance, Operation of Roadway Maintenance Machines equipped with a crane, and various other Roadway Maintenance Machines including spikers, ballast plows, tampers

o Experience as a Track/Bridge/Work Equipment Supervisor*
*Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset

Education/Certification/Designation

  • High School Diploma
  • Qualified in CROR and GEI
  • Qualified in Crane Fundamentals and Basic Machine Orientation
  • Qualified on numerous Roadway Maintenance Machines, including but not limited to spikers, ballast plows, tampers, etc.
  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Education in Engineering or other related field such as Physics or Mathematics*
  • Certified Crane Operator from an accredited organization*
  • Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

Technical Skills/Knowledge

  • Knowledge of CN’s Engineering department and field operations, including operation of RMMs and RRMs equipped with a crane
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Knowledge of Systems Applications and Products (SAP)*
  • Knowledge of LMS*
  • Any knowledge for any of the above would be considered as an asset

Responsibilities:

Training Delivery

  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the creation and update of training materials
  • Provide training to employees through classroom instruction, hands-on demonstrations, and field training exercises
  • Maintain an understanding of how to practically apply skills related to the operation RRMs and RRMs equipped with cranes, including safety procedures, inspection, and preventative maintenance
  • Maintain an understanding of how to apply Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) and General Engineering Instructions (GEI) as they relate to Engineering employees, track protection, and the operation of RRMs.
  • Foster a culture of Safety Leadership to ensure the safety of all employees, operations, and the public
  • Evaluate trainees’ ability to demonstrate tasks proficiently
  • Administer and grade exams
  • Complete performance and qualifying documents and ensure all training events are incorporated in the Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Carry out other Engineering-related training as assigned

Maintain and Upgrade Facility Equipment

  • Assess functionality of tools and equipment for hands-on training components prior to training
  • Repair all malfunctioning tools and equipment

Develop Comprehensive Training Plan

  • Collaborate with Managers and Senior Managers to determine and identify functional training needs
  • Develop training delivery plan
  • Establish training delivery schedule designed to meet training needs

Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office and field training environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The incumbent must be available to work night shifts and weekends when necessary. The role requires significant travel to carry out field training and quality audits. The amount of travel is dependent on the location of major production gangs who require RMM qualification assessments.
