As a Telecommunications and Metering Engineer based in Tyneside, you’ll play a pivotal role in supporting capitalised Electricity Transmission projects, ensuring the seamless operation of Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) and Operational Technology (OT) communications networks on our substations infrastructure such as Telecoms room, relay protection, telephone systems and protection communications. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
Investigating and rectifying faults on the Operational Telecoms (Optel) network, collaborating closely with the Optel Network Management Centre. Providing comprehensive support for Tariff Metering, Operational Metering, and other light current equipment, ensuring operational excellence 24/7, 365 days a year on all our telecommunications assets. Performing Settlement Metering calibration, replacement, and audits as a Meter Operator Agent (MOA1), ensuring precision and accuracy. Supervising and coordinating work activities of NG colleagues and third-party contractors, prioritising safety through the generation of safety documents and risk assessments.
Your work will primarily take place within high-voltage substations and associated infrastructure, with a coverage area of the North East at Tyneside and Teeside, you’ll extend support to other Telecoms teams and projects, ensuring a collaborative and dynamic work environment.

You’ll have opportunities for training and development, with planned training courses (Senior Authorised Person (SAP) training will take approx 18 months to complete) and quarterly team meetings at our training facilities at Eakring in Nottinghamshire and our offices at Warwick.
REQUIREMENTS:
Ideally you’ll have a minimum qualification NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in an Engineering discipline. Previous Telecoms experience. You must be able to commit and attend training courses at our Eakring site in Nottinghamshire which will require short stays away from home. Desirable - SCADA experience, IT infrastructure – WAN/LAN, IP/MAC Addresses, Data Storage.
