Required qualifications

  • Ability to comply with all training requirements and certifications in a timely manner.
  • Must be organized, highly responsible, detail oriented, and willing to work as a team member.
  • Must have a positive attitude and commitment to staying on schedule with fish feeding and tank cleaning.
  • Must be able to work independently, follow detailed instruction (both written and oral), while recognizing when assistance is required.
  • Must understand and demonstrate use of basic math skills.
  • Ability to enter data on a computer in electronic format.
  • Must be able to follow a rigorous schedule and have access to dependable transportation.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience assisting with lab research and data collection.
  • Experience working with fish.
  • Experience working in a hatchery or aquaculture facility.
  • High level of organizational and planning skills.
  • Experience in working in a team towards a project goal.
  • Experience with Microsoft programs - Excel, Word, Power Point, etc.

Fish Lab Research Technician
Job summary
The fish lab research technician will be responsible for assisting with lab work related to the project entitled: “Increasing local seafood security and resilience in response to COVID-19: Best practices and cost estimates for rearing Yellow Perch, Perca flavescens, in recirculating aquaculture systems.” The technician will work closely with University of Minnesota Sea Grant (MNSG) fisheries and aquaculture extension educators and other project staff raising Yellow Perch in a recirculating aquaculture system in the lab. The technician must be reliable, organized, exhibit good attention to detail, and demonstrate basic math and data entry skills. Supervision will come from Minnesota Sea Grant Fisheries and Aquaculture Extension Educator, Amy Schrank. The technician’s day to day work will be overseen by a contractor on the project as well as the MNSG Aquaculture Extension Associate.
Job tasks and essential functions
The fish lab research technician will focus the majority of their efforts in the MAISRC lab raising Yellow Perch. The technician will work in cooperation with other MNSG and project staff including other lab technicians and project contractors. The major responsibilities for this position fall under the goal of the Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture focus area of MNSG.

Job tasks may include:

  • measuring fish feed
  • feeding fish
  • monitoring water quality parameters
  • cleaning tanks
  • observing and recording fish behavioral data
  • maintaining and cleaning lab space
  • assisting with fish measurement
  • recording and entering data on paper and electronically
