Responsibilities:

The Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM) at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ames Iowa invites nominations and applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (ISU-VDL) at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor. The ISU-VDL is a full-service, fully-accredited diagnostic laboratory serving veterinarians and animal owners across the state of Iowa and North America. The laboratory provides a wide variety of diagnostic services to meet the needs of a large and diverse caseload (>120,000 cases in 2023).
This position will allocate approximately 50% effort to independent research in population sciences, 40% in support of ISU-VDL diagnostic services, and 10% to teaching. Research will focus on the development and application of analytical tools and methods for the detection/diagnosis, prevention, and control of infectious diseases in livestock and poultry populations. Research efforts are encouraged to be collaborative and cooperative among professional colleagues (ISU and peer institutions) and ISU-VDL clientele (veterinarians, pork producers, bio-pharma industry). A 40% commitment to ISU-VDL services will focus on enhancing the value and use of veterinary diagnostic information to ISU-VDL clientele and stakeholders. This includes technical support for the development of internal and client-facing diagnostic data management capabilities, the development and use of cutting-edge animal health information management applications, and facilitation of methods for the improvement of livestock and poultry population health using on-going diagnostic data. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach in both the professional and graduate curricula and mentor graduate students in the department’s cross-disciplinary graduate programs in Veterinary Preventive Medicine (MS) and Population Sciences in Animal Health (PhD).
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to a positive and collaborative University environment through their public service, committee involvement, and participation in professional organizations. Iowa State University especially seeks candidates who are interested in contributing to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and outreach. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to the enhancement of the health and well-being of animals and human beings through excellence in education, research, professional practice, and committed service to the State of Iowa, the nation and the world.
