Description:
The Religion Department at Barnard College seeks applications for a three-year Term Assistant Professor in South Asian religions. The ideal candidate will be a specialist in South Asian religion with a focus in Hinduism. The successful candidate will bring methodological diversity to the department, which currently emphasizes literary, historical, and legal studies of religion. The position is open to candidates working in a wide range of research interests including ritual, performance, place, or ethnography. We would particularly (though not exclusively) welcome a colleague with expertise in caste, indigeneity, or other forms of marginalization practiced in modern or pre-modern South Asia. The successful candidate will also be conversant in the broad questions that animate the academic study of religion, including theoretical and comparative concerns. They will also be expected to teach an annual standard survey course entitled An Introduction to Hinduism along with 4 other courses (a five-course load).
