Description:

The Tissue Culture Lab Manager is part of the well-coordinated Cultivation team and is responsible for overseeing day-to-day functions of the tissue culture lab for Cultivation; managing all lab associates; ensuring all processes, SOPs, training requirements, schedules, policies, and procedures are followed, and ensure the Cultivation goals are met. He or she will lead the tissue culture lab in culturing cannabis plants in an aseptic environment for commercial production and managing the Curio Wellness genetics portfolio. The ideal candidate will excel as a team member within a tightly controlled, state regulated system and adhere to timelines and SOPs. The Lab Manager must also focus on the safety of employees and maintain a clean facility and lab. This person is responsible for ensuring that all products are produced to Curio’s best-in-class standards, while assuring appropriate levels of inventory are produced in the most cost-effective manner and in full compliance with all State and Federal regulations. This person will be responsible for the documentation, ordering, and receiving of all inventory and products, maintaining facility compliance, and cleanliness. They will manage all members of the laboratory team while reporting to the Director of Cultivation and work closely with other Managers and Directors to execute the company’s overall strategy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Responsible for managing tissue culture lab staff, schedules, processes, inventory, and vendor relations
  • Serves as a role-model and resource for lab and Cultivation staff concerning products and services, policies and procedures, industry news, and changes in regulations
  • Responds to all associates questions, concerns, or suggestions and takes action, when necessary, to resolve conflicts
  • Responsible for delegating tasks to lab associates in order to maintain a compliant and clean facility
  • Coordinates with the upper management team to ensure accurate information is communicated to the lab staff
  • Manages weekly mother crop production task planning and execution to include activities such as, mother stock maintenance; propagation; vegetative growth and flower induction; flower growth; harvest, dry and cure; and integrated pest management (IPM) program.
  • Manages inventory, including controlled substances, to ensure no disruptions to operations while minimizing capital utilization.
  • Strategically leads Curio’s cultivar portfolio management system to ensure patients can select from a robust portfolio of Curio’s best in class flower.
  • Implements and enforces Lean and Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) or related standards.
  • Responsible for compiling and updating the Applied Science Newsletter
  • Responsible for all Process Flow Maps, SOPs and ensuring they are practiced and enforced throughout all processes
  • Plans, coordinates, and oversees the transition of product development by ensuring the proper tasks are executed and the environmental conditions support the cultivation of superior product quality
  • Oversees supply stock, orders, and deliveries to ensure efficient levels of all applied science inputs and supplies
  • Manages and maintain 5S throughout the cultivation division.
  • Measures crop output against quantitative metrics with a focus on continuously improving quality and quantity of crop output measured on a square foot of canopy basis by analyzing data and report writing
  • Lead a team in aseptic micropropagation methodologies for mass scale clone production of cannabis, both inside and outside of the lab.
  • Maintain detailed and organized laboratory records and data. Present data in regular meetings.
  • Ensure laboratory meets all compliance regulations, certifications, quality standards, and safety standards.
  • Regulate operation, maintenance, and cleaning of all laboratory equipment in a safe manner.
  • Communicate with other departments to schedule the release of plants from the lab to meet demand.
  • Ability to make, dispense, and fine-tune recipes for tissue culture media.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Oversees all tasks and processes, ensures proper documentation of all applicable activities in accordance with standards set by the State and the company.
  • Creates new SOPs for new procedures.
  • Keeps up to date on published literature in cannabis tissue culture and keeps lab technologies current.
  • Ability to learn new laboratory techniques and teach others.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position is accountable for the management of others, through a subordinate supervisor, including selection, recommending termination, performance appraisal, and professional development.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree (BA, BS) in Biological Sciences, preferably plant science/biology, of four (4) years of equivalent job-related experience. MS in Science, Plant Science or Biology welcome.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • In depth knowledge of tissue culture practices and plant anatomy
  • Previous experience managing plant tissue culture
  • Ability to safely use sharp instruments
  • Willingness to work in tight spaces and loud environments
  • Ability to work around chemicals and fertilizers safely
  • Knowledge of scientific data collection and analysis
  • Previous experience working in a laboratory environment (3+ years)
  • Previous experience working with plants (3+ years)
  • Experience with commonly used lab equipment and equipment maintenance (tabletop pH meter, media dispenser, laminar flow hood, autoclave, hot plate, incubator, microscope, etc.)
  • Experience with Excel (advanced), PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, and databases
