Location
This position is eligible for a hybrid work model. When attending an event or meeting in person, your primary office location will be based out of City Hall, 426 Brant Street, Burlington, Ontario. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.
Position Overview
Reporting to the Supervisor of Traffic Operations the Traffic Technologist is responsible for investigating, researching and analyzing data to ensure safe and efficient transportation, and providing excellent customer service. The incumbent also generates reports to Committee and Council on a wide variety of traffic related issues and is responsible for responding to and investigating traffic inquiries or complaints on a continuing basis.
Responsibilities

The Traffic Technologist will be responsible for:

  • Preparing technical reports to Committee and Council on traffic operational concerns and updates to the Traffic By-Law.
  • Maintaining knowledge of, and researching the industry best practices and innovative solutions
  • Responding to and investigating traffic requests/enquiries from residents, Council and senior staff.
  • Maintaining the collision database, including co-ordination of collision report input and updates, as well as, co-ordination of the City’s annual traffic count program.
  • Conducting field investigations perform analysis of traffic data and provide recommendations for traffic operational improvements, including preparing related work orders.
  • Administering various traffic related permits, attend Public Open Houses and may be required to appear before Committee and Council to answer questions or clarify issues in reports.
  • Evaluating traffic control plans included in special event applications and other road closures. The Traffic Technologist will be required to attend select road closures for on site observations for compliance.
  • Reviewing and commenting on Capital Works road projects as they relate to pavement markings and traffic control.

Requirements
The successful applicant will have at least four years of related work experience in addition to a College Diploma or University Degree in Transportation Engineering (or suitable equivalent). Excellent communication, organizational and diplomacy skills are essential. The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. Additionally, the incumbent will be proficient in Microsoft Office and possess a demonstrated knowledge of related traffic engineering practices. Experience with traffic calming, road safety reviews, traffic flow and capacity analysis, as well as, holding a Certified Engineering Technologist, Engineer in Training or Professional Engineer designation are desirable assets
A valid G driver’s license is required with an acceptable driver’s abstract (no more than three (3) driving related convictions or an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire).
This position may require occasional travel between sites and/or City facilities.
