Description:

The John Radcliffe Hospital performs 700 adult cardiac surgical cases per annum. The case mix comprises a range of coronary revascularization techniques, complex thoracic aortic surgery, mitral valve repair and remodelling, minimally invasive coronary and valve surgery, and off-pump coronary surgery. The team provides mechanical support, cell salvage and standby services to the Cardiology Angiography Suite, and has also recently commenced a programme of minimally invasive Mitral valve surgery
The Department of Clinical Perfusion is offering a rare and exciting opportunity to train as Clinical Perfusion Scientist. The successful candidate will embark on a 2-year training programme that will blend hands on clinical experience, with enrolment on an MSc programme in Perfusion Science, at the University of Bristol.
Candidates will require a 2:1 in an appropriate Life Sciences degree and upon completion will be eligible to gain Registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland.
Successful candidates will work a 4-day week and during training will participate in the department’s 24-hour on-call rota.

Train under the direct supervision of an accredited Clinical Perfusion Scientist
Enrol onto the MSc blended learning programme in Perfusion Science at the University of Bristol
Assist in the delivery of the perfusion service
Under direct supervision by a qualified Clinical Perfusionist, undertake a range of perfusion techniques during routine and emergency cardiopulmonary bypass
Develop skills to assess the patient’s relevant medical history, pathology and diagnosis to enable appropriate decisions concerning conduct of the procedure
Set up, prime and run cardiopulmonary bypass equipment
Sample, analyse and interpret arterial/venous blood gases and patient coagulation status
Administer drugs, including colloid/crystalloid fluids, vasoactive drugs, cardioplegia solution, potassium, anticoagulants and haemostatic drugs under the direct supervision of a qualified clinical perfusionist
Manipulate on a second-to-second basis the patient’s cardiovascular system whilst on cardiopulmonary bypass
Undertake haemofiltration and blood transfusion as required under direct supervision
Assist in the quality control, calibration and maintenance of expensive and complex medical equipment in Clinical Perfusion
Acquire an understanding and assist in the running Intra-Aortic Balloon counter-pulsation therapy under direct supervision
