Job Description and Duties
Under the direction of the Engineering Services Branch Chief (Eureka), a Senior Transportation Engineer, the incumbent will work in coordination with North Region Hydraulics and Stormwater staff and other project development functions. The incumbent is responsible for completing the activities necessary in the development and/or support of various transportation improvement projects; providing oversight on aspects of transportation projects; evaluating impacts of projects by others within and adjacent to the State Right of Way; coordinating and communicating with various functional units and the public; and performing fieldwork as required to complete above tasks. Workload assignments may involve travel.
Provide support for Project Development. The incumbent will prepare Preliminary Drainage Reports and Floodplain Hydraulic Studies, usually as a result of a request from either a Project Engineer or Environmental Coordinator for inclusion in the Project Initiation Documents (PIDs). Support will also require the completion of the project Drainage Report, providing all aspects of calculations and assumptions in the areas of hydrology, hydraulics, open channel flow and roadway drainage in order to justify the drainage facilities proposed using the Highway Design Manual and other widely accepted references and software. Incumbent will perform spread and interception calculations as well as calculation of headwater and normal depths using computer hydraulic analysis and modeling software. Development of watershed hydrology and channel armoring design. Design of drainage systems and preparation of drainage contact plans and cost estimates for transportation projects. Review of drainage design work done by others within and outside the Department will be required. Review comments submitted in either memo format or comment spreadsheet to the requester.

Working Conditions
Position located in Eureka, Humboldt County.
The incumbent will work in an office environment under artificial lighting. Project development and support will require fieldwork in potentially steep, rough terrain and poor weather conditions. Frequency of fieldwork is entirely dependent upon workload assigned.
The Caltrans Transportation Engineer (Civil) Rotation Program is a mandatory 24 month to 33 months rotation assignment for all permanent, full-time Transportation Engineer (Civil) employees that have completed their probationary period hired by Caltrans Districts after June 22, 2018, or an earlier date as determined by the Districts. The purpose of Rotation Program is to provide opportunities for employees and Caltrans to benefit by participating in a standardized process that systematically engages newly hired engineers. Participants will develop well-rounded project delivery knowledge, skills, and abilities by rotating through diverse project delivery functional units. The Rotation Program includes mandatory core assignments in Design and Construction units, as well as a mandatory elective assignment. Each rotation assignment is typically between 6 to 12 months and will be based on workload needs and the employee’s goals. Assignments may involve long term travel and can be located throughout the state.
In addition to the Caltrans Transportation Engineer (Civil) Rotation Program, an incumbent may be required to go on loan to another project delivery function when there are temporary or peak staffing needs in those areas.
