WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO YOU BRING?

  • Your educational background includes completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (i.e., related to Civil Engineering and/or Transportation Engineering) and some directly related work experience (in transportation engineering) is integral and will contribute to the success in this role.
  • Your application will demonstrate good knowledge of transportation planning/engineering principles, practices and procedures, and proficient in the use of Synchro.
  • Your experience working with traffic signal controllers and/or traffic signal timing cards is an asset.

Responsibilities:

As Transportation Planning Technician, you will investigate and makes recommendations regarding traffic signal control/traffic operations issues. This includes liaising with City of Toronto staff and traffic signal contractors on issues related to the installation and maintenance of transit priority equipment at signalized intersections, and conducting site inspections. Assists in investigating and evaluating operating and reliability problems related to bus and streetcar service. In addition, assists with reviewing development applications and other proposals received from the City of Toronto and other agencies regarding future development work and transportation projects; identifies potential problems from those developments/projects that may affect TTC operations; and coordinates responses to the City of Toronto and other agencies to ensure that transit can serve customers in a safe, effective and efficient manner.

  • You will conduct technical investigations in response to traffic operations suggestions including: modifications to signal timings/operations, intersection geometric improvements, and enforcement of existing traffic regulations.
  • Assist in the testing of transit signal priority (TSP) algorithms in the City’s traffic signal controller
  • You will liaise with City of Toronto staff to discuss and/or resolve issues regarding the operation, installation or repair of transit priority equipment and other related matters.
  • Direct traffic signal maintenance contractors in work relating to transit priority equipment installation and repair.
  • Assist in investigating and evaluating operating and reliability problems related to bus and streetcar service.
  • To this end, you will review municipal development applications (i.e. for future development work) to ensure that developments are designed in a manner that is compatible with the goal of encouraging increased transit use.
  • Identify potential problems from those developments that may affect TTC operations.
  • You will assist with reviewing proposals from the City of Toronto and other agencies, including those related to planned cycling infrastructure and rapid transit projects.
  • Co-ordinate responses to the City of Toronto and other agencies to ensure that transit can serve customers in a safe, effective and efficient manner.
  • You will assist with identifying, reviewing and implementing new transit priority measures, including additional transit signal priority intersections, and the development/implementation of an Advanced TSP system.
  • Undertake special projects as required to provide assistance to section staff (e.g. video assisted analyses of transit operations at complex intersections).
  • You will participate in the TTC’s Customer Service Ambassador Program.
