Description:

There is a position available for a Transportation Working Lead. Applications must be completed online and will be accepted until noon, May 2, 2024.
Reporting to the Transportation Supervisor, this position is responsible for maintaining the School District vehicle fleet including school buses, motorized and non-motorized maintenance vehicles, as well as compressors, light plants and grounds equipment.
Hours of Work: (8) hours per day
Duties to Commence: May 6, 2024
Work Year Base: Twelve (12) months per year
Commencing Salary: $45.20/hr.

QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES:

Journeyman Red Seal Certified Heavy Duty or Transport Mechanic
Knowledge of computerized diagnostic equipment
Minimum Class 2 Driver’s Licence with Air Brakes endorsement
Acceptable Driver’s Abstract
Propane Installation Certification preferred
3-4 years proven experience as a Supervisor or Foreman
Vehicle Inspectors Certificate required or willing to obtain within the probationary period
Ability to work independently and set priorities
WHMIS Certificate and other online safety training provided by the District to be completed within the probationary period
Other applicable safety training and/or certifications as provided by the District to be completed as needed
Ability to manage difficult conversations in a professional manner
Ability to utilize Windows computers including Microsoft Office, Outlook, Project and Work Order software
Ability to lead by example while demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement through best practices and strategic planning in the workplace
Ability to ensure that repairs and projects are completed on schedule and on budget
Ability to communicate effectively and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, school administrators and maintenance staff, City, Provincial inspectors and others
Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate or willingness to complete training within probationary period
Must be able to pass a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Search conducted by the District prior to starting employment
Good interpersonal skills and the ability to be an integral part of a team
Please Note: Proof of education is required prior to starting work

Responsibilities:

Consults with bus drivers and maintenance personnel to schedule vehicle repairs.
Oversees the work of mechanics and others as assigned. Schedule workloads and delegates duties to mechanics.
Performs mechanical and electronic diagnosis and repairs on vehicles and equipment.
Performs safety checks and road tests vehicles.
Maintains records of vehicle and equipment repairs.
Assures that shop and shop equipment are in good repair.
Purchases replacement parts and maintains an adequate parts inventory.
Monitors and purchases Diesel Exhaust Fuel (DEF) and oil supplies.
Consults with the Transportation Supervisor in regards to purchasing equipment and major inventory items.
Monitors the Pre-Trip Inspection reports and ensures that repairs have been performed.
Train and mentor staff on job related equipment and tasks.
Follows proper safety rules and standards by ensuring the worksite is safe and secure, that equipment and vehicles are operated according to set standards.
Ensure the safe handling of hazardous materials (WHMIS) and the safe use and operation of equipment and hand tools.
Provide appropriate training to staff in accordance with established policies, procedures, regulations and codes.
Ensure proper reporting of workplace injuries and proper corrective actions are taken following workplace accidents.
Informs the Supervisor(s) and/or Administrative Officer of vandalized equipment or property.
Performs other job related duties as directed by the Transportation Supervisor.
