An exciting opportunity has for highly motivated team player to join our well established Orthopaedics Department at the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, welcoming applications for Trust Doctor ST1/ST2 level to join the team.
The hospital is situated in a beautiful location on the outskirts of the historic Roman City of Chester. We are within easy access of Manchester Airport, North Wales and the Lake District. The Trust is committed to continued professional development, and to a culture of ongoing service improvement.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in a 1 in 8 full shift rota and will be subject to ward based cover as a requirement of the post, they must hold full registration with the GMC with a licence to practice.
This post is not recognised for training purposes; however the Trust will ensure teaching to a high standard to assist the successful applicant in progressing further.
In-Patients
This involves clerking routine and emergency admissions, ensuring that appropriate investigations are carried out, and caring for in patients including attending Consultants’ and Registrars’ ward rounds, monitoring the progress of patients, and assisting in Theatre operations. You will be expected to have an up-to-date knowledge of the patients under your care and be able to present them on ward rounds.
Out-Patients
There will be a commitment to see patients in clinic and to undertake pre op assessment clinics when necessary.
Out of Hours
The post holder will participate in the 8 person full-shift rota for Trauma & Orthopaedics. At weekends you will have the support of an F1 House Officer between 8am – 5pm on the Orthopaedic Ward.
Cover Arrangements for Leave
All leave is covered internally by colleagues and it is the responsibility of each consultant to ensure that arrangements have been made to cover duties including on-call. No more than 2 Persons will be allowed leave at the same time.
Education
A well-equipped post-graduate centre and library is sited adjacent to the General Wing on the Countess of Chester Hospital site. There is an active programme of lectures and meetings, including those of the Chester and North Wales Medical Society. In addition, Liverpool, with extensive University and postgraduate facilities, including the Liverpool Medical Institution, is only 20 miles away.
The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:
The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds
Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility
Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.
The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.
The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.
