Description:

The Client Service Team has an opening for an Underwriter who will provide support to the department and in turn, to the wider Operation given the importance of the Underwriting role. This is a full-time, in-office, permanent position, which is based in Melbourne. The position will report to the Operations Chief Underwriter.
In order to best support the growth of our operation, our ideal candidate will either have an engineering degree and experience, or recent underwriting experience. However varying levels of experience and qualifications will be considered.
Working as a critical team member on large and complex accounts under the leadership of the account manager, the underwriter supports underwriting decisions and implementation across the program.
This includes risk selection, risk assessment, and risk transfer decisions that support development and retention of a profitable book of business for the mutual benefit of FM Global and its clients. As an underwriter you will be involved in understanding the risk quality and exposure of an account, data collection and analysis, reviewing and issuing insurance policies, developing client relationships and proposal development. Supporting new business is also a key aspect of the role.
You will be provided with extensive training in underwriting, client servicing and sales as outlined in a specific development plan. This will include travel to our Corporate Office and developing networks by engaging with underwriters and account managers from around the globe. This could extend to basic engineering training based on a candidate’s experience.

By learning about one of the core areas of FM Global’s business, you will have exposure to some high profile and large Australian companies and gain firsthand experience about how FM Global develops relationships with clients and brokers.

  • Provides assistance to Account Managers in handling underwriting details including line-setting, interpreting and applying risk assessments, risk transfer analysis, MFL Study development and pricing. Provide analysis of terms and conditions, values, and review policies for accuracy.
  • Learns loss prevention and control concepts. Including, how to read and use information from Location Risk Assessments and Risk Reports to apply Underwriting Requirements and identify instances where exceptions and approvals are required.
  • Gains and maintains a good knowledge of the underwriting requirements, policy terms and conditions, profitability analysis, and pricing. This is to assist the Account Manager in determining a sustainable and profitable underwriting position.
  • Assists the Account Manager in account servicing activities. Including: handling reinsurance procurement, preparing for internal and external meetings, presentations and proposals. This involvement helps develop account management awareness and effective presentation skills.
  • Applies interpersonal skills to build relationships with Client Service Team members working in a variety of roles from processing to engineering to account management and Staff Underwriting.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification.
  • 2+ Years Insurance, Engineering or Financial Services industry Experience desired. Prior experience in client facing role is a plus.
  • Strong technical aptitude, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines, good with technology, and strong attention to detail.
  • Polished and professional communication, both written and verbal.
  • Can build rapport with others easily and comfortably, comfortable with being in a client facing role at times.
  • A track record of being able to learn new technology, technical concepts and materials and apply this knowledge successfully.
