Description:

UPMC in Central Pa is seeking motivated and enthusiastic candidates for our full-time Urgent Care Technician Training Program, with our next cohort beginning June 17th, 2024! Through this 6-week paid training program, selected candidates will enroll in our Urgent Care Technician Training Program, to prepare them for a future healthcare career in a local UPMC Urgent Care facility.
For the first week, selected candidates will orient at the Urgent Care in Harrisburg (775 Arlington Rd.) Starting on June 24th, your 6-week classroom training will begin at our training center in Lemoyne, PA. The schedule for the classroom setting is Monday – Friday, from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. After your 6-week training in Lemoyne is completed, trainees will report to the assigned location in Harrisburg (775 Arlington Rd.) and transition to the permanent schedule of three 12-hour shifts and one 6-hour shift per week, with rotating weekends and holidays.
This paid-training program does come with a 2-year work commitment with UPMC.
In our program, selected candidates will complete education and clinical training to progress to the next step in our career ladder: Urgent Care Technician. Training will include didactic lessons, clinical courses, practiced competencies of the Urgent Care Technician Training Program, and clinic rotations throughout our local Urgent Care or Express Care locations. Clinic rotation will begin with observation and progress to patient contact, registration, assessment, and patient care under the direction of an experienced Urgent Care mentor. Upon completion, trainees should expect to successfully obtain required certifications.

Responsibilities:

  • Collection of patient information, past medical history, medication review and health screening per rooming guidelines.
  • Obtain vital signs, prepare patient and room, set up instruments and equipment needed to complete the visit.
  • Assist provider with the patient exam and procedures. Relay instructions, provides health education and plan of care to patient/family.
  • Performs direct patient care and assists with a variety of orthopedic and wound related care including clean and dress wounds, splinting and application of prefabricated durable medical equipment.
  • Administers medications, vaccines and breathing treatments according to provider order and following departmental protocols.
  • Performs medical testing, including EKG, audiology, and spirometry.
  • Performs full audiogram and screening audiometry following National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health standards.
  • Performs spirometry following National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health standards.
  • Follow protocols for specialized occupational health physicals and surveillance programs.
  • Follow established procedures for the collection and processing of specimen/cultures for analysis including the appropriateness and stability of sample.
  • Maintains competencies in techniques to obtain specimens via nasopharyngeal, nasal, oropharynx, capillary, wound, urine, etc.
  • Performs point of care testing according to protocol.
  • Performs drug and alcohol testing following chain of custody protocols and approved standards for urine, saliva, hair, breath, blood collection.
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must have basic computer skills.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Ability to multi-task, work independently and with a team of care givers.
  • Must be able to adapt to variable workload and work with a diverse patient population.
  • Must be able to remain calm and respond to emergent situations.
  • Previous clinical or medical experience preferred but not required.
