37.5 hrs x 2 posts and 1 post 24 hrs per week
This is an exciting opportunity for a job within our expanding Urology Department which we hope to become a Centre of Excellence with a Urology Assessment Area also being developed with further training and development opportunities.
We are a growing department and have 11 Urologists and operate electively 5 days per week and have emergency admissions 7 days a week. You will be expected to Develop ,Support and Manage a patient centred service delivering and ensuring high standards of care. You will deputise for the Senior Urology Nurse Practitioner and contribute towards Strategic and Operational Transformation of this innovative service by Inspiring Leading and Supporting this team.

You will be an autonomous practitioner and also member of a team who will engage and transform a service with new service development opportunities.

  • Use specialist nursing skills to access the physical and psycho-social needs of patients within the defined caseload, providing both expert clinical advice to patients and carers and an accessible service, through the continued provision of nurse led outpatient and specialist outreach services. Discharge patients from outpatient episodes.
  • In partnership with the multidisciplinary team, develop and advise highly specialised programme of care for patients, synthesizing complex information whilst comparing a range of options based on the available evidence/best practice, in order to support and empower patients and their carers to make informed choices.
  • Work autonomously examining and diagnosing Urological complaints, making decisions about treatment, investigation, admission, follow up and discharge, referring on to consultant colleagues when reaching the limit of own expertise.
  • Responsible for the delivery of a detailed, accurate and potentially complex clinical handover and to produce detailed and accurate written information within the medical notes regarding all clinical assessments, investigations completed and requested and treatments administered. Maintaining accurate and contemporaneous patient records
  • Management of Urology wounds post in patient discharge. Co-ordinate telephone follow ups and triage of patients.
  • Undertake specialist pre-assessment of patients undergoing major Urological surgery to include written informed consent for invasive procedures

The Urology Nurse Practitioner Team are an integral part of our Department working with the Consultants - Ward team - CNS and SCP teams as well as our patients. This will ensure our patients receive the care and outcomes from a team of highly skilled, experienced staff with Trust Values that actively work towards promoting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

  • Acts on clinical incidents pertinent to area to reduce clinical risk. Actively participates in Clinical Governance activities and works to maintain a high quality service
  • Provide specialist nursing cover across the Urology Department
  • Health Roster support to complete and maintained within the expected monthly time frame in the absence of the Lead UNP.
  • To assist in the investigation of complaints, incident reports and untoward incidents within the department areas in line with Trust framework for Clinical Governance and as part of the senior management team. This will include action plans / root cause analysis, closing the loop and reviewing trends. Ensuring all this is fed back to staff.

Leadership and management

  • Responsibility to support and develop the team of nurse practitioners to ensure enhanced levels of specialist support and care across The Trust for 7day clinical service for future department planning.
  • To work, influence and challenge across professional and multi-disciplinary boundaries in order to ensure best practice and empowerment of patients and their carers.
  • Lead and support nurses and specialist nursing teams participating in quality improvement initiatives, service evaluation and research projects and disseminate evidence into routine clinical practice.
  • Contribute to specialist area research, audits and develop programmes or activities within the framework of clinical governance at local level, in order to advance and contribute to existing knowledge.
  • Contribute to data collection within the Urology department
  • Ensuring Appraisals are completed and actions supported
  • Demonstrate advanced level of clinical reasoning and judgement, and demonstrate ability to make decisions in the absence of evidence or when data is conflicting.
