Description:

The Utility Technician l and ll, are responsible for the day to day operation and maintenance of the municipal water, wastewater utility. This position is responsible for ensuring the municipal water and wastewater systems operate in accordance with environmental legislation and approvals.

Job Duties:

  • Responsible for the day to day operation and maintenance of municipal water distribution, wastewater treatment and collection, in accordance with environmental approvals and regulations.
  • Inspect reservoir facilities, pump houses, lift stations and their associated control and alarm systems, and record readings. Maintain and update applicable records for all operations.
  • Monitor water and wastewater quality including collecting water and wastewater samples for analysis.
  • Install, remove, repair, read and record or calibrate commercial and residential water meters.
  • Maintain and repair pumping equipment and lift stations, together with the associated starters, electrical fuses and controls related to such equipment.
  • Flush, clean and maintain water and sanitary sewer mains and facilities, including hydrants and valves associated with such systems.
  • Inspect and maintain sanitary and storm sewer catch basins, manholes and mains.
  • Monitor and operate wastewater stabilization ponds and sewage flow equipment.
  • Maintain yards and properties associated with municipal water, wastewater facilities and oversee the work of junior staff and contractors assigned to such duties.
  • Operate and maintain all public water sales outlets.
  • Ensure applicable records and documents for all utility operations are maintained and updated. Prepare reports, collect documentation and research activities.
  • Participate in the development of effective preventative maintenance programs and operating guidelines for each utility.
  • In cooperation with the Utility Technician I and III, ensure the Utility Supervisor is regularly updated on the status of the various systems and recommend repair and/or replacement strategies for the various systems.
  • Work shifts and standby duties for after regular hour call out or emergencies as required.
  • Install, maintain and repair municipal water and sewage lines, hydrants, and services as directed.
  • Operate, maintain and repair equipment used for utility functions as required.
  • Maintain appropriate records.
  • Install or terminate water or wastewater services to customers as per instruction from superior and by policy.
  • Maintain inventory of meters, valves, and other water/wastewater repair components.
  • Coordinate minor construction and landscape projects.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Adhere to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.

Job Skills:
Must work effectively and efficiently with others and alone with little or no supervision, always be punctual, communicate openly, takes direction well, and provides god customer services and communicate effectively with the public. Self-motivated team player who enjoys working with the public. Effective communication and organizational skills are required. Work is performed within the county while exposed to the outdoor elements. Physical job requirements include: occasional heavy lifting of 25kg; frequent squatting, bending twisting, and climbing.
Job Qualifications Utility Tech ll:
High school diploma or equivalency. Valid certification in Level II Water Distribution, Level II Wastewater Collection, Level I Wastewater Treatment, and Level I Water Treatment. Minimum 2 years’ experience as a water/wastewater operator. Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
Job Qualifications Utility Tech l:
High school diploma or equivalency. Valid Certification in Level I Water Distribution and Level I Wastewater Collection. Experience as a water/wastewater operator would be an asset. Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
