Description:

WSP is currently seeking a Junior or Intermediate Vegetation and Wetlands Ecologist to join our Ecology and Environmental Impact Assessment Team in Alberta or Saskatchewan. Reporting to the Group Manager, the successful candidate will be provided the opportunity to work on challenging and diverse projects across western Canada and the prairies and north with a wide range of complexity.

WeAre WSP

A day in the life:

  • Identification of potential environmental constraints in relation to proposed developments (e.g. wetlands and vegetation, listed species, non-native species);
  • Conduct field assessments to industry standards and prepare reports for projects within a variety of sectors (i.e., mining, transportation, municipal infrastructure, renewable energy, and oil and gas sector) and support training of junior field staff;
  • Ability to determine the scope, plan and oversee vegetation surveys;
  • Analyze, evaluate and interpret data while providing results within the scope and objective(s) of a specific project;
  • Prepare and review technical reports;
  • Willingness to travel around western Canada to complete field work in a variety of environments and locations, including remote work, for varying durations during summer months;
  • Develop and contribute to project proposals and budgets;
  • Interact with clients, staff and regulatory agencies; andImplement corporate and client safety programs.

What you’ll bring to WSP:

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in botany, biology, ecology, environmental sciences or related field with a background or experience in wetlands;
  • 0 to 2+ years plant identification skills, ideally for prairie, wetland and boreal landscapes;
  • 0 to 2+ years of experience working in a consulting firm in an Ecologist (vegetation or wetlands) role or equivalent;
  • Experience conducting wetland mapping and classification is a requirement;
  • Proficiency in imagery interpretation to delineate and classify wetlands and other vegetation types in western Canada;
  • Strong understanding of regulatory legislation, guidelines and regulations;
  • Basic GIS skills and understanding;
  • Experience working on multidisciplinary projects;
  • Registration or ability to register with a professional association (e.g. P.Biol, P.Ag. R.T.Biol.) within Saskatchewan or Alberta is required;
  • Strong, demonstrated technical written and oral communication skills are a requirement;
  • A valid driver’s license (min Class 5 with GDL removed);
  • The desire to succeed in a dynamic, progressive organization.
