Job Description
The Australian Financial Review is looking for a visual journalist to create rich digital stories using data visualisations, geospatial tools and other interactive elements that will engage and inform our readers.
Day to day you will:
- Build bold and beautiful presentations, charts, maps and infographics that will bring complex stories to life.
- Work closely with designers, reporters, editors, and producers to deliver insights and context to Financial Review subscribers. And you will also generate and develop your own ideas. There is potential for this to be a team-leading role depending on experience.
- Use your technical acumen to devise presentations, you will also exercise design and journalistic judgment to ensure the clarity, accuracy and functionality of your work.

Qualifications
What we would like to see:
- Demonstrated experience in HTML, CSS, JavaScript (ES6) and modern web technologies.
- Experience or interest in working in a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to meet deadlines, and to adapt and find pragmatic solutions when faced with time or technical constraints
- Technical creativity, curiosity and versatility
- Experience in a newsroom is ideal but not essential
- Data visualisation, including libraries like D3.js.
- Data journalism and related practices and tools, including web scrapers, spreadsheets and statistical methods.
- Experience in server-side languages like PHP and Python
- Mapping and GIS tools.
