Your responsibilities

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering has an immediate vacancy for a university professorship (W3) in “Biochemical Engineering”. The Institute of Biochemical Engineering connects the engineering and the biochemical sciences, is a main institute of the two research centres for pharmaceutical engineering (PVZ) and systems biology (BRICS) and pursues research and teaching in the bioprocess engineering sciences with focus on biochemical reaction technology. The main research areas of the future research should be in the following fields:

  • Biotechnological (cell-based) production (from micro to pilot scale) of
  • Pharmaceutical proteins/natural products
  • Biobased polymers for technical applications (e.g. composites, batteries)
  • Development of innovative bioreactors and bioprocess technologies

From the successful applicant the management of a larger institute and research in the stated main research topics of the institute are demanded. The topics of biochemical engineering shall be addressed holistically using bioprocess engineering- and simulation-based methods. The duties in teaching comprise undergraduate and graduate courses in our programmes of Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Sustainable Engineering of Products and Processes and Mechanical Engineering/Energy and Process Technology including lectures in English.

Our expectations

  • Excellent competency in biochemical engineering from a university, research institution or industry
  • Capability and engagement to carry out, coordinate and lead interdisciplinary research projects
  • Willingness to integrate and collaborate, in an interdisciplinary manner, with other research groups of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Life Sciences, especially within the research centres for pharmaceutical engineering (PVZ) and systems biology (BRICS), as well as with other research institutions in and around Braunschweig, e.g. Fraunhofer-Institute ITEM
  • Experience in leading a research group, research unit or industrial leadership competence
  • Experience in the acquisition of external funding and the management of both fundamental and applied third-party-funded research projects
  • Very good command of the English language and willingness to perform lecturing in English
  • Willingness to actively participate in the self-administration of the university
  • Willingness to participate in the internationalization of the university

  • A degree in a relevant field
  • Pedagogical aptitude
  • Special qualification for in-depth independent scientific work, as a rule proven by an above-average doctorate
  • Additional academic achievements, usually within the framework of a junior professorship, a post-doctoral degree (Habilitation) or through achievements equivalent to a Habilitation
