Job Details:
Job Summary: The role is responsible the development, implementation and maintenance of WHSE management system, plans, procedures and specific programs including the continual compliance with relevant state legislation. The role will assist in the ongoing and day-to-day provision of support, training, advice and reporting. This will be to all employees including to senior management. This position works under minimal supervision and direction. Incumbents of this position will regularly exercise discretionary decision-making authority.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Workplace Health, Safety & Environment administration, communication and advice:

  • Responsible for the development, maintenance and implementation of WHSE initiatives and programs consistent with documentation, legislative requirements and best practice;
  • Prepare, develop and distribute monthly WHSE reports, safety alerts and presentations to employees and customers when required
  • Actively participate in formal and informal communication to increase and enhance the understanding and awareness of WHSE
  • Continually review work practices and recommend ways in which processes and systems can be improved.
  • Advise management of any system and legislative changes as well as accurate and timely advice on prevailing WHSE issues
  • Maintain incident registers/data;
  • Develop safety alerts, newsletters and monthly themes
  • Provide hands on WHSE support to administration team including administering first aid boxes, safety notice boards; this list is not exhaustive

Workplace Health & Safety partnering and reporting deliverables:

  • Provide hands on WHSE portfolio management of sites along with customer contract obligations
  • Maintain the WHS system that meets the requirements of AS 45001, ISO 9001 and ISO14001.
  • Adequately educate and train managers, supervisors and employees in regards to their WHSE responsibilities.
  • Conduct formal investigations of accidents, incidents and dangerous occurrences and ensure that statutory reporting is conducted and met in accordance with legal requirements
  • Report on the incident including statistics and trends to management as and when required.
  • Development and facilitation of safety programs.
  • Development of WHSE plans for projects.
  • Lead, guide and partner the HSE committee meetings
  • Be actively involved within workers compensation and rehabilitation at the direction of the Human Resources team
  • Encourage and ensure WHSE continuous improvements through the use of mechanisms designed to promote involvement and gain commitment at all levels
  • Participate in relevant industry bodies, internal HSE forums etc. to maintain a level of contemporary knowledge and best practice approaches
  • Work in conjunction with the Human Resources team, identify development and training needs for employees that are necessary to meet the levels of competency required for our operations and customer needs
  • Partner with senior management in developing and maintaining effective relationships with contractors and third parties in so far as this relates WHSE issues
  • Prepare responses to tenders as appropriate, including customer focused safety plans ensuring that these legislative and contractual requirements are commercially sound
  • Liaise with government authorities as and when required.

Environmental partnering & reporting deliverables:

  • Maintain the Environmental Management System to ISO 14001.
  • Ensure managers, supervisors and employees are adequately educated and trained in regard to their environmental responsibilities.
  • Development and coordination of environmental training programs.
  • Development of environmental plans for projects and tenders.
  • Auditing of projects to ensure compliance with legislation and standards.
  • Design and deliver environmental targets and objectives

Quality assurance deliverables:

  • Fully developed and maintained quality management system to ensure all certifications are maintained.
  • Auditing and observations of the work practices are completed to ensure compliance and report non-conformances.
  • Non conformances are corrected within prescribed timeframes
  • Monitor all internal and external non-conformance’s and work constructively with all levels of management and staff in implementing solutions to prevent reoccurrence
  • Auditing and observations of projects to ensure compliance with legislation and standards.
  • WHSE policies and procedures are developed, approved, implemented and educated to employees
  • Conduct audits and observation along with corrective action on project sites.
  • Provide advice on current regulations to management and to employees.
  • Produce the appropriate reports.
  • Follow up and close out on any outstanding audit items.
  • Review procedures and work instructions

Minimum Job Requirements:
Qualifications

Essential:

  • Formal qualifications in WHS (Cert IV WHS or equivalent); or minimum 5 years’ experience in similar role
  • Valid drivers licence

Desirable:

  • Cert IV Training and Assessment
  • Return to Work Coordinator

Skills/Experience/Knowledge

  • Minimum 5 years experience in a WHSE role preferably within either a technology, construction, mining , manufacturing, FMCG or at least a blue collar environment
  • Sound understanding of WHS&E legislative requirements, Standards and Codes of Practice
  • Knowledge and understanding of the following Standards:
  • AS / NZS 4801 – Occupational health & safety management systems
  • AS / NZS ISO 9001 - Quality management systems
  • AS / NZS ISO 14001 - Environmental management systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of workers compensation process.
  • Experience with relevant computer packages including Microsoft Office packages.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication and interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Organising and planning skills and ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  • An ability to use initiative and priorities workload.
  • An ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision.
  • An ability to cope with change and conflicting demands
  • An ability to stay calm under pressure
  • An ability to meet multiple deadlines
