Job Description
The Youth Development Teacher is responsible for providing supervision and assistance to high school students with disabilities enrolled in Teens in Motion. Job duties would include planning, implementing, and encouraging student involvement in program activities. Additional duties would include behavior management, assisting with personal needs, communicating with program participants and their families, communicating with school staff, actively supervising students at all times. Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older and a high school graduate.
  • Completion, with passing grades, of 12 units in Child Development (CD) or related field. (Related fields can include: Arts, Early Childhood Education, Education, Humanities, Physical Education, Psychology, Recreation, Sociology, and Theater)
  • Completion, with passing grades, of 6 units with 6 more units of current enrollment in Child Development or related field will be considered.
  • Minimum of 6 months working in a child and youth development, education, or comparable setting preferred.
  • Must have knowledge of developmental disabilities and other special needs.
  • Must have a minimum of 6 months experience working with individuals with special needs.
  • Must have experience working with teenage population.
  • Must have experience in behavior management.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to speak, read, and write the English language. Additional languages are highly desirable.
  • Must have a sincere interest in working with children 5-12 years of age and the ability to relate to children and adults in a professional manner.
  • Must be willing to assist students in the restroom.
  • Must be highly dependable and have the ability to be flexible with change within a daily schedule.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act in an emergency situation.
  • Physical ability to lead sports, games and curriculum activities, monitor youth behavior, and perform general housekeeping responsibilities.
  • Ability and flexibility to travel to local program locations.
  • Must meet Community Care Licensing qualifications for teacher.]
  • Criminal record clearance in accordance with YMCA and Community Care Licensing guidelines.
  • Successfully pass a physical exam and provide negative TB test results within 7 days of hire. (TB test results need to be current within 1 year.)
  • Must provide proof of measles (MMR), pertussis (TDap), and influenza immunizations within 7 days of hire. (TDap needs to be current within 10 years, MMR does not need to be renewed.)
  • CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification, must include Adult and Child/Infant, obtained within 30 days of hire and must be from one of the following certifying organizations:
  • American Red Cross
  • American Heart Association
  • American Safety & Health Institute

Essential Functions

  • Facilitate the inclusion of high school students in after school activities by accompanying and supervising students.
  • Provide physical support per the individual needs of the students including, but not limited to lifting over 50 lbs., diapering, helping in/out of wheelchairs.
  • Provide behavior management support and intervention techniques that ensure the safety of all program participants.
  • Implement age-appropriate program activities that engage students in active and meaningful experiences and in accordance with the goals and policies of the YMCA of San Diego County.
  • Actively supervise program participants, ensuring their guidance and safety at all times.
  • Communicate in a timely, positive and professional manner with all participants, families, school and district personnel, and community partners.
  • Collaborate with school personnel and program partners to align high quality academic activities and coordinate student services.
  • Provide positive behavior guidance that supports the developmental, social-emotional, and physical needs of all students.
  • Assisting students in the restroom is a required part of this position.
  • Ensure that program meets the requirements of the YMCA of San Diego County.
  • Perform daily duties that ensure space is properly maintained, organized, clean, and safe.
  • Follow emergency procedures appropriately to ensure the safety of the participants and staff.
  • Provide leadership to all assigned YMCA Youth Development Aides.
