POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

· Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in an engineering discipline
· 15 years of relevant commercial or government experience in facility operations, which includes at least 10 years of nuclear experience and 5 years conducting assessments
· U.S. citizen
· Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance
· Professional Engineer License is desirable
· Demonstrated ability to evaluate nuclear facility engineered safety systems, including design, analysis, risk management, systems interactions, authorization basis, unreviewed safety question process, preventive and corrective maintenance, inspections, and configuration control requirements
· Must have a demonstrated ability to develop reports and presentations (oral and written) that are understandable to a broad audience
· Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
· Proven ability to meet deadlines and perform under pressure in an uncertain environment
· Willing and able to work well as a part of a team.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Nuclear Safety Specialist will assist the DOE Office of Enterprise Assessments in monitoring and assessing the technical basis and performance of the Department’s nuclear safety systems, development of assessment reports, and presenting the assessment results to senior management. The successful candidate will work closely with a Federal team leader and other team members assessing the policy, procedures, and documents associated with engineered nuclear safety systems in accordance with applicable DOE requirements. The Nuclear Safety Specialist may also provide additional technical support, develop new assessment methodologies, and/or take on special projects in support of the assessment process. The incumbent can expect to participate in three to six assessments per year.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Provide nuclear safety engineering expertise to plan and execute nuclear safety system management assessments at various DOE sites/facilities. This includes the evaluation of quality assurance functions critical to maintaining engineered safety systems in a manner that ensures they remain capable of fulfilling their defined safety functions, such as engineering design, configuration management, procurement, and maintenance.
· Provide technical input to the assigned Federal team leader to support the development of a comprehensive assessment plan that outlines the scope and methods for each assessment.
· Support the onsite team visit(s), conduct interviews, additional document reviews, facility walkdowns, and work observations.
· Assess the potential impact of ineffective nuclear safety systems including the potential risk to the Department’s mission.
· Provide written and verbal reports of assessment results.
· Develop recommendations to improve nuclear safety system related programs and/or implementing procedures or practices.
· Develop assessment findings and prepare assessment reports.
· Other duties as specified by manager or organization.
