General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS’ expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Nuclear Fuels Development Engineer to support the Nuclear Technologies and Materials (NTM) division within GA-EMS. Under limited supervision and review, this position is responsible for determining and developing effective approaches for resolving a wide range of difficult nuclear fuel design and engineering problems.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; four or more years of experience with a bachelors degree or two or more years of experience with a masters degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Must possess general knowledge of nuclear fuels, moderators, components, and systems, and have technical competency in lab environments.
  • Must possess strong understanding and experience in advanced material characterization techniques (both destructive and non-destructive).
  • Must possess the ability to design and execute test plans.
  • Experience leading a team tasked with solving complex engineering challenges.
  • Experience in the space of nuclear materials development is desirable.
  • Broad knowledge of multi-scale modelling principles is desirable.
  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to lead the development of technical project; and support other less experienced staff members working on engineering analyses.
  • Strong communication (written and verbal), computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required, as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is required.
  • Active DOE Q Security Clearance is beneficial
Responsibilities
  • Engineering, technical design and analysis for nuclear fuel projects and proposals from concept generation, with a nuclear engineering focus.
  • Perform terrestrial and space-based subsystem level design, including requirements analysis, mission analysis, and design trade-offs.
  • Develop testing and characterization methodologies as necessary to evaluate key nuclear fuel properties
  • Develop and coordinate execution of test plans to support nuclear fuel development with clearly defined logic, metrics, and timelines.
  • Document findings and communicate reports and technical presentations at engineering meetings and participates in program reviews.
  • Support future NTM engineering needs and the modifications required to accomplish technical goals.
  • Address technical issues utilizing standard engineering and scientific principles to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of work.
  • Assume technical and engineering responsibility for segments or key portions of contracts.
  • Provide technical communication within the Company management and may represent the Company as a technical contact to customers.
  • Maintain the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Represent the organization as a prime technical contact within the engineering team for assigned project(s)/program(s) and with supplier or customer meetings and presentations.
  • Formulate plans and guide the development and implementation of engineering solution(s) including deployment, resource requirements, testing, documentation, integration and compliance and safety.
